Liga de la Comunidad
The Resource Center for Nonviolence has for years been the proud sponsor of “La Liga de La Comunidad” or The Community Soccer League. “La Liga” provides a healthy and community orientated activity for many hundreds of our community members of all races and genders. There are currently 36 adult men teams divided into two divisions, 18 women’s teams, and 20 youth teams divided into three divisions based on age: 14 and under, 12 and under, and 9 and under.
Every weekend you can find players with their friends and families at numerous fields throughout the county including Anna Jean Cummings, Soquel High School (wintertime), Polo Grounds, Highland Park, Harvey West Park and Jade Street Park. As a project of the Resource Center for Nonviolence, La Liga emphasizes the need for nonviolent conflict resolution and good sportsmanship. In fact, violence of any kind, verbal or physical, from players or spectators, is not allowed in any way and carries stiff penalties within the league. It is our hope that the players and individuals involved with the league will take away an understanding of how to better resolve conflicts while simultaneously building stronger community.
Although it’s still under construction, you can find out some info about games at www.laligasc.com. There are now t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. available with logos of the different leagues (at RCNV and at some of the fields, especially Jade Street Park.)
Youth League: The two older youth leagues are playing on Saturdays from 9-5 at the Anna Jean Cummings. The youngest youth play on Sundays at New Brighton Middle School from 10-2.
Adult League: Women’s league playing every Sunday at Jade St. Park (at 47th Ave. in Capitola). Mens Leagues are playing at Polo Grounds, Highland Park, Santa Cruz High School, and sometimes Harvey West Park. Both locations have games Sundays 9 am-5 pm.
