AT: Peace United Church, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz

Medea Benjamin has traveled several times to Iran, and she makes use of her firsthand experiences with politicians, activists, and everyday citizens to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities of Iranian society and the role of Iran in the region.  She tackles common misconceptions about Iran’s system of government, its religiosity, and Iranian citizens’ way of life. Her most recent book,”Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran”, is part of a campaign to prevent a war with Iran and instead promote normal trade and diplomatic relations.

“President Trump’s reckless move of withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal exacerbates conflicts in the Middle East, alienates us from our European allies, and increases the possibilities of a catastrophic, senseless war with Iran.”

About the Speaker:  Medea Benjamin is the co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange. She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 40 years, including struggles to stop wars in the Middle East, redirect bloated Pentagon spending to human needs, and encourage financial institutions to stop making a profit from war. She is the author of ten books, including Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control and Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection.  Her articles appear regularly in outlets such as The Guardian, The Huffington Post, CommonDreams, Alternet and The Hill.
