Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day)
Exhibit: 10 am – 5 pm
Ceremony: 3 pm
San Lorenzo Park, 137 Dakota St., Santa Cruz
A deeply moving memorial exhibit commemorating California military personnel from California killed in Iraq: A pair of combat boots for each of the 455 military men and women from California who were killed in Iraq will be on display along with civilian shoes, representing Iraqi citizens killed in the conflict.
Mother’s Day was originally a protest against war by mothers who said they did not want to send their husbands and sons into battle to kill other women’s husbands and sons. This exhibit is a reminder of the human cost of war. It’s an opportunity to bless, honor and mourn military personnel and civilians who have died in the conflict in Iraq.
The Eyes Wide Open exhibit is the project of the American Friends Service Committee. This Santa Cruz visit is cosponsored by Inner Light Ministries, S. C. Friends Meeting, S.C. UN Assoc., 1st Congregational Church S.C., Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (S.C. & Pajaro Valley), Nonviolent Communication S.C. , Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Pax Christi,ย and the Resource Center for Nonviolence.
