The Palestinian Ambassador to the USA will discuss the origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the ongoing consequences of “al Naqba” or “the catastrophe” for Palestinians in which the Israeli War of Independence and creation of the State of Israel resulted in the creation of 750,000 Palestinian refugees.
Afif Safieh has served as head of the Palestine Liberation Organization delegation to the Untied States in Washington,D.C. for 2 1/2 years. He will soon leave his post to serve as Palestinian representative to Russia. Safieh was PLO representative to the Holy See (Vatican) and the United Kingdom before his appointment to Washington in October 2005. The Ambassador will address the stalled peace negotiations, the role of Hamas in the Palestine National Authority, building alliances between Israelis and Palestinians, and joint efforts of progressive Israelis and Palestinians with peace and human rights forces in the USA. Afif Safieh is from a Jerusalem Christian family. He is a remarkably articulate, pragmatic, courageous, persuasive and forward-looking advocate for a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ambassador Safieh is a great bridge-builder among the many Palestinian, Jewish and other people around the world working or a just and sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
